Run the Jewels Ripped the Stage on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert Last Night

Clearly "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" doesn't shy away from real hip-hop. After having Kendrick Lamar grace the Late Show's stage a week ago, Stephen Colbert brings on Run The Jewels to again stir up things in the late night talk show world. The duo that is Killer Mike and El-P was accompanied by the band, TV on The Radio, to perform their song "Angel Duster" off their 2014 LP "Run the Jewels 2". To get right to the point, it was a good performance. The live version matches the energy of the studio version and nothing gets lost in translation lyrically. All the themes of drugs, government corruption, and religion get explored. They even manage to magnify those themes by simply bringing a maturity to the performance.

El-P completely ripped on the mic. He sounds great live and his raps (just like the energy of the performance) is the same as the studio version. He's coming at you so fast but the words hit you so slowly you submerge in the meaning of what he's saying. By the time Killer Mike's verse promptly comes in, you get immediate stank face as you shake your head. His verse is so painfully truthful and informative that it is an instant attention grabber. It adds to the wholly authoritative nature of the performance and I love that. Getting something out of the music you listen to is often times the greatest feeling and that's what this performance does. You walk away from it thinking and a good performance always leaves the audience with something.

I've been listening to RTJ so this is nothing new to me. But it is still an impressive performance to new and old fans alike.

Watch the performance below.
