Phantom Thrett Fragments

An emcee in a medley of melody. As a sample size, Phantom Thrett's third song in the tracklist, "Fragments (I, II, III & IV)," can be viewed as a paradigm for the journey of styles found throughout his 12-song album "The Speed Of Things." More evidently, however, is the surrender to experimentation and collaborators to just see what the songs will sound like. The final result still being damn good.

The first part of "Fragments" melodically awakens with an acoustic riff accented like production on a Baby Bash record. Phantom Thrett's falsetto, melodies and tone become wind as he sends a breeze with the delivery of his words. The "26th Hour" artist's lyrics rub off slightly meta and keeps Thrett in a heady space we've come to know him for whilst trying on a new style vocally.

Part two of the track almost mindlessly transitions into itself. Pulled straight out of the backpack, a finely chopped soul sample oddly puts a twinkle in the eye of the melody it so joyfully cuts up. Bursty drums and igniting percussion produce an easygoing rhythm as a landing strip for the wordy, metaphor laden rapping we're accustomed to hearing from Phantom Thrett -- verse and messaging being some of my favorite from the MC.

Fragments's last two parts sound closer to a whole. Both tracks are caught in a ripple of ambient music. The perspective of Thrett's vocals and lyrics sound like cryogenic spoken word, placed in present day to be understood in a distant future. His "Blazing Saddles" analogy is one of my favorite lines and displays of foresight in such a creative way.

Fragments (I, II, III & IV) is the gateway to understanding the project as a whole. So if you're gonna start anywhere, start here.
