Carter Ace Asiatica A Little Time Off

As the first Carter Ace song I admittedly wasn't feeling upon first listen, "A Little Time Off" (feat. Asiatica) intrigued me the same way Frank Ocean's "Blonde" and Blood Orange's "Negro Swan" did. My initial reaction to both albums was the same. And now officially two of my favorite albums ever, I've learned not to approach listening to music the same way each time. I had to trade-in headphones for a speaker. And once the melodies and tones filled my room, the song connected.

Melodic lines from guitar chords splashed over significant vocal moments, like Asiatica's delicate melodies and caressing tones, blanket her verses and second chorus's texture in flower petals meeting soft, moisturized skin. The tension and release transitioning to her chorus is a blushing moment. A Little Time Off's cracking drums sound as if in the process of transitioning from synthetic drums to real drums, positioning the rhythm as this cliffhanger for forthcoming changes when all the changes occur within the synthesizer and instrumentation around it.

Carter's standoffish vocals and tones delivered in the verse sound closer to talking, masking the melody to no more than a hum. The approach vocally takes discordant lyrics and allots them story and feeling, though the "Raining In LA" artist mainly sings with little emotion behind him on the record.

The synergy on the track is amazing. Carter Ace and Asiatica's give and take is equally distributed. Their song feels like it occupies the volume of space around you. And being in the thick of it registers as a win.
