Amindi Engages In Break Up Civility on minztape

Loving with a little reckless abandon as if your heart can bare it, because youth favors the timetable to heal. This is one of many ways to read Inglewood, California-based artist Amindi's three song pack entitled "minztape." Another is to find yourself envisioning emotionally significant moments in your adolescence and young adulthood -- imaginary or real.

I read both.

The opening song "Cocoa Butter Shawty" somehow elicits the memory of videotaping your boyfriend or girlfriend skateboarding, admiring their physical poetry with each trick they do. Cam the Chef and Chailatay's grainy production set the entire minimalist tone through a floating chord progression, stammering guitar riff and clogged drum. Amindi's doo-wop harmonies and gusty melodies sway the blasé delivery of the lyrics and bring desperation to the dependent songwriting. And because of said delivery, "Cocoa Butter Shawty" feels that much more low-key.

Minztape's closing song "Focus," on the other hand, makes remorse sound like a desirable emotion. Produced by and written with Walt Mansa, frizzante chords and soulful accenting piano melodies drown the song in dejection. The sulking vocals hit these UK tones and delicate vocal riffs to allow some feelings of acceptance and forward motion into the music, something Amindi sounds peacefully ready to do by "minztape's" end.
