It's that age-old story: the creatives that pour their soul, time and effort, blood, sweat and tears into their passion/craft to yield only a few, if any, believers in them. And it's discouraging. To be largely unsupported by most friends and family is isolating, not to mention the general public overlooking your work that also takes its toll. This retelling of never receiving your flowers while you can still smell them is an all-too-familiar story I'm down to hear again and again. And musical artist Mani Coolin's "Know Your Worth" feels that in abundance, but won't let it stop his momentum.
In the penultimate cut on his EP "The Coolin'," Mani's collected song puts into perspective the end goal of achieving what only you see can see when others around you can't. A combo soul sample of bassline and vocals sound lifted straight from a skipping record with a jumpy needle. Glazed snares and the lightest mist of hi-hat symbols keep the rhythm so mellow it can hardly be classified as such -- just watch out for the hallucinogenic change in the sample prior to the closing game courtesy of Mitch. That being said, all of that would fail to connect without Mani Coolin's initial game.
Mani Coolin' deals metaphors, double entendres and straightforward lessons into the bars to stress sticking to the grind and, as the title of the song suggests, knowing your worth. Because once you know that, you can't be used in this game and the trivial will fail in its pursuit, soon fading to the back of your mind. He flows in sections and his cadence is lax, throwing off the scent that the "Persistent" artist knows a thing or two.
Know Your Worth is releasing. It's nobody's-gonna-give-you-your-flowers, so buy your own. It is rejecting free work and setting your prices in accordance with the quality. The track is a good pre-game to the equally shining record, "Ova Wit That" ... but I'll let you find out about that one on your own.
