The Lucius Fox to Noname's Batman, Smino's Batman, Saba's Batman and so many more caped crusaders in music, musician, artist and composer Phoelix supplies the gadgets with his production as proxy. But sometimes you need to don the suit yourself to feel like the hero.

Written, produced and mixed by Phoelix, his "SHORTS" (EP) sounds like nothing short of a collection of emotions attached to memories the "GSPL" artist is simply trying to tell us about and express through beats and sparingly used vocals. Track titles numbered 001-005 give "SHORTS" a minimalist face that is easily read emotionally. "001," the song donning the crown as my favorite, seemingly appears to you as a younger version of Phoelix through pitched up vocals. Hybrid rapping/singing sounds closer to rushed talking muted into vocal tones, lending itself to the backstory of lean use and surviving cold Chicago winters during the verse. Harmonic acoustic riffs anchor the song to dusty trails taking you down south by lineage. Something about the production feels constructed with gaps, gaps in rhythm and melody that the forthcoming songs eventually fill, resulting in us getting that type of personal information.

"004" I believe fills in the gap of current status. Mystical chords and keys obumbrate the song to set in motion the life at sea in your own head atmosphere. Sandpaper brushing percussion and marbled drums aid in the complacency of the mood.

The rhythms demand no more than a head bop. His dozy melodies excuse fading attention, leaving only the beat. Suddenly "004" begins to sound like Phoelix's brain during the making of a beat, while "005" gets us out of his head to juke with four feet and happy to be able to chill afterwards.

"SHORTS" (EP) is weird, but good. The vibes, there are multiple. And you gotta catch 'em when they come to you. It somehow becomes an expected landing for this tastemaking producer turned hero of his own story.
