Can something be considered performance art if you have no idea who the performers are and there are no visuals, but the dramatic execution and emotional fling targeting you is a direct hit? Because if so, Montreal-based band Chiiild's latest song "Count Me Out" is just that.

And whatever that is, I need more of it.

"Count Me Out" is incomplex in its song structure and dense in its instrumentation and lyric delivery. Swelling eyes put to a string section awaken the song and I can't help but be reminded of Mac Miller's masterful string section on "2009." Silvery drums drop a lucid snare, hi-hat, bass drum relationship atop accenting bass, valiant horn injections and static guitar that opens the rebounding hook. Chiiild's sensitive breakdown spacing the first verse breeds a moment to catch your breath before synthetic vocals cull you back into the emotion of it all with nowhere to shield yourself from the unpleasantness and coldness of reality.

The intoned stolid melodies bring a matter-of-fact sensibility to the intention in the lyrics. "Count Me Out" from hook to verse and back again play like a bridge ablaze that leads to the one you always wanted. And that tramping pocket is the sonic courage to make you cross it. A battleground truly fitting for the R&B/soul arena.
