UK artist, songwriter and weaver of EP's Joy Crookes has at last brought into the world her "Perception EP."

Favoring at five songs with a moderate team of songwriting partners and producers including Jevon Ellis, Jonny Lattimer, Felix Joseph, Barney Lister and Fiona Bevan behind the music, "Perception EP" from the introductory song "Hurts" begins the project's moving walkway for a tour of the waiting room in Joy's heart. Emotional elements in the songwriting sound well-traveled. Her jerky melody and opening flow set the tone of trepidation and reserve moving forward as each song is more engaging than the last.

Tracks like "London Mine" capture Crookes's perspective of the city, as if we are cast in her mental home movie on VHS witnessing a major love in her life, rewinding nostalgia and the best moments of life conducted through a place in the world I have never been. The swelling string section, acutely applied to the progression, sounds like what a build up of tears dying to fall looks like. Clogged drums ride a routine rhythm that guide the way in a song with such openness courtesy of Joy's otiose melodies and golden vocals.

Following directly after comes what is perhaps the nucleus of the EP, "Since I Left You - Demo", the weight of heartbreak and significance of getting back who you were before it is felt deep into the "ivories" to the space of silence cutting into the tempo. A ballet performance shadows the melody on the chord progression. Crookes's weary melody paces the song to an exposed position ending in the self-defensive, escorting the "Two Nights" artist to finally exhale in "Darkest Hour." Jabbering harmonies and icy sax melodies construct a brightening bridge. Fair melodies and mindful piano through verse and chorus encourage the lyrics up until the saxophone outro polish the notes, leaving  "Perception EP" locked in a smile towards the things or people that hurt you.

Joy Crookes fashioned a vast musical glass we get to view as half empty or half full. My perception had me hearing the latter. So now the perception's on you.
