Mac Miller protege and Pharrell Williams super fan Choo Jackson's first major drop of 2019, "Anime 2," came at an opportune time for the project to live in my phone and donate a song fitting to my life.

Still off the heels of the weighted loss of great friend, mentor and widely respected Mac Miller, a question mark loomed over what the music of his closest peers would sound like upon their collective heels touching back down and reality showing up to usher them forward. Choo's cut "Gold Medal" provides the first step of continuing to live life after loss through a pridefully teary song. "Swimming" toned synthesizer chords with horn-like accents outline the melody of a bubbly chord progression floating atop it, reminding me of the Wurlitzer melodies on "Come Back To Earth." Christo and Nice Rec's production, down to the thawing breakbeat in the drums, relay races with Miller's swan album, holding the lead that Mac built musically.

Choo Jackson's ponderous verses evaluate everything and speak directly to those who need to hear an acknowledgement of death or pain because of it, a promise to figure out what happens when it is your time and a refusal to have it happen soon because of the driving force behind legacy. Choo Jackson's gliding flow has a hanging cadence thrown on the final word of a line and brightens the song. Jackson's post-chorus sounds like a direct message to the afterlife, smoothing the track out with Nelly-esque melodies that feels like a level of acceptance, a level of evolution, documented through the words of Mac with the emotive interview sample on "Gold Medal's" outro.

"Gold Medal" helped me find my foot to take that step after I lost a few friends recently. The safety of "see you tomorrow" that institutions like school or our adolescence gift us, no matter how false, is a bliss you never get back as you get older. Tomorrow is never promised, but when songs like "Gold Medal" come around the music motivates you to seize the day right now so what you do can see the days you weren't able to.
