Virginia artist Marco McKinnis is taking a step backwards into R&B of yesteryear to sprout a new soul hybrid set out to reclaim the scattered pieces of his broken heart.
McKinnis's six-song project, "Underground", explores the stages of a human lacking love and the desperation to give it. Spearheaded by minimalist production, Marco's tormented falsetto and glissading melodies find themselves at the mercy of a praying chord progression like on the theatrical "Still Waters" or on the intense shifting acoustic rhythms on the persecuting song "Silence." Within the EP's emotionally drifting sequencing, the songs gain more traditional sounds of a ballad. Marco McKinnis's vocals hold more vibrato and a greater presence of runs. Drum machine-backed rhythms take the driver seat, most prominent on the beautiful concluding track, "Temperature."
In totality, "Underground" contains a multitude of beautiful moments that play like they're floating down a stream of memories. The slippy arpeggio tucked away in the mourning chord progression on "Another Love" and the Ginuwine-like movement of Marco's vocals hit the ear like inner resolution. And that bassline on "Unwind" is one of those grooves that makes you really appreciate being black -- if you know, you know. The Virginia-based artist crafted a project that feels like a true moment. And it is worthy of your ear and a thorough listen.
