New year, new me? No. Something more like new year, another side of me.

Perpetual curator of sad songs, Victor!, awakened his 2018 with a bedroom banger that escaped his forthcoming project, 2000. Vic!'s loosie, Suburb Boy, knocks for the hard worker that uses emotions and the destination of your dreams as fuel.

A soporific chord progression knots off the track to a place that sounds like possibilities. SB's tempo slows up with every listen. His peppered 808 percussion takes its time to bring you on board with the rhythm. In other words, the rhythm of success, growth or happiness. Those clog kicks and splashy claps are a modest bounce, hitting like humbly knowing how nice you are at your craft. And Victor!'s vocals separate himself from the rest of the pack.

Cervantes's vocals, particularly his lyrics, speak painfully true personally and generally capture a shared mind-frame. Minor outlying reverb on his vocals give Suburb Boy a loner feeling. But when he dips that falsetto, the passion and desire peek through. His line "I've been out here on my lonesome" didn't have to connect so well like it did. That line digs deeper into the mind frame of someone trying to make it happen for themselves. The overall melody convincingly takes things introspective yet holds a jerky movement. VICTOR!'s vocals sound in reach. But by the four count transition into the outro, Suburb Boy sounds like it is hitting the heights he once dreamed about. The tempo ratchets and the melodic appeal the song had becomes the latest melodic addiction. The higher vocals sound beyond where he was -- a little happier, a little more successful, but not any less a workaholic who only makes time to miss people.

Suburb Boy is one of the most fire releases from the Chicago artist. This is something different that is all him just the same. I am a suburb boy. And after hearing this, I have a feeling you all will want to be, too.
