The unique voice of theMIND is the only thing that would make me not recognize Tears For Fears' classic, Everybody Wants To Rule The World. You could tell me over and over again that this is a cover, and I'd still be skeptical.

TheMIND's jannock rendition, EW2RTW, becomes a disrobed version off the songwriting strength of Chris Hughes, Ian Stanley, Roland Orzabal and theMIND's impassioned vocals.

Aside from Matt Joynt's pong-playing 808 drum, the original's 80's pounce is stripped to nothing but acoustic. A dusty guitar riff is brought carrying a similar weight as the chords in SZA's Drew Barrymore. That somber cloud lingers over the Summer Camp artist's head, putting an unexpected, crushing heartbreak in the two verses and bridge as he sings.

TheMIND's slurppy, vocoder voice sounds connected to everything. With slightness of his vibrato and chuff in his delivery, EW2RTW amplifies like he loves and hurts with people and nature alike. TheMIND, as he usually does, makes his songs/moments feel and read like a palpable human. As the name implies, he is a heady singer. He also does it through a hopeful melody and patient tempo. The Chicago artist may not have wanted to rule the world, but he sought out to rule this classic song. I don't think anyone can deny he's in the ballpark.
