An off flow with a more off track, likely unquantized, beat is a technique not many can pull off. These are things in rap that take time and hardly anyone has a better understanding of that than Phantom Thrett.

Thrett's latest from his crate, Demo Tape Raps, plays its hand at discussing techniques and attempts a few of its own. The Dimitrious La Vaughn Bandy-produced demo sounds like interrupted tries at chopping the sample. Programmed drums switch its programming mid-rhythm, yet the wonky sound presents a balance. The beat holds Phantom in his center, getting wordy and deep.

Phantom Thrett's vatic-feeling verse is chock-full of wisdom nuggets. Through a clear-headed cadence, he rips out metaphors and wordplay atop an enhanced rhyming lexicon stating his worth and dominance as far as rap skill goes. My favorite line: "Even Heath Ledger knows I ain't a joke" is wordplay that crystallizes Thrett's idea of how others should perceive him. At its best it leaves a confidence for us, at its worst, a level to strive for.

Demo Tape Raps comes packaged as words to make you sharper. There is only something to gain from running this one. You won't regret it.
