You didn't think 2017 could wrap up without someone supplying the proper soul-bounce music that the youth is missing, did you?

The gift that keeps on giving, today's music climate, drops more joy with Leven Kali's Joy RMX under the ear and skill of Thelonious Martin and additional production from A'niko Thomas.

Joy RMX opens up sounding like an NPR Tiny Desk Concert. A shimmery chord progression builds anticipation for the drop of Thelo's obstreperous drums. The way he touch pads his courtyard rhythm and the overall punch of his drums sounds like baby sky explosions on this track. In other words, his drums work like firecrackers in this sonic setting.

The background harmonizing for the counter-melody that in the latter half of Joy RMX gets the progression treatment through the keys is such a satisfyingly protected sound. You find the joy in the remixes production. Leven Kali's exultant vocals apply the magic that can come from joy, more specifically black boy joy.

Leven Kali's vocals come as boisterous as the production but leaves nurturing dreams, including his own. His pliable melody sets the precedent for how he plays with his vocals. Hearty sung verses and goose bump-inducing harmonizing runs deliver half socially candid lyrics and half offers of encouragement, with a little extra rhythm for good measure. Thelonious Martin put it as accurately as possible via Twitter: "Leven Kali sings like an angel." His warming vocal presence does sound like a force looking out for you. So I guess you can't go wrong with that statement.
