Artist John Singletary has a name that lets me know he understands that less is more.

Singletary's latest, Drown, modestly reveals worldly pressures around him through ailing songwriting scarcely used, with literally only two elements in his production. Drown's source of communication and direction stems from the loop of his earthy acoustic guitar riff. The sound of the chords and the slides between them strangely erase daylight from the atmosphere of the music. Drown's drums during the instrumental break and chorus of the song evoke the pancake snares during the final chorus on SZA's Supermodel. The bare nature in the sound feels similar, too.

Aside from John's cold-blooded verse and chorus, Drown is filled with anesthetized harmonies and deep breath delivers, playing to the ear like Singletary is preparing for something painful, something rendered impossible to come back from.

Drown sticks to vocals, riff, and drums. The music has a raw impact because of it. And because of this, I know John Singletary is an artist we should all keep our eye on.

Listen to Drown below.
