Ric Wilson's strength is in his hair. His security lies within his skin, charging a theme of self-prophetic speech you can't teach. The soul bouncer is again pushing to start a practice around his preaching, a practice I'm down to show up for.

Wilson's newest released single from his forthcoming project, Negrow Disco, is entitled Ponytail and finds itself under the production reigns of Hurley Mower. Mower's production squeakily scrubs any grime off of your confidence. The progeny of The Neptunes sounding synth keys and horns swirl into one wuzzy rhythm. The weighty welt of his kick and dizzy, cartoon halo xylophone riff amplifies out like unrestricted movement. Hurley Mower's beat rides with a bop and an engagement Ric Wilson utilizes to rap/sing his #blackboyjoy and freedom into the world's energy.

Ric's catchy chorus is drenched with self-love and a vocal rhythm. The rhythm of his singing snatches the space of the pocket for the kick. Lyrics like "You can see the growth in my ponytail" echos like an uncompromising position to change who/how we are. Wilson's melodic verses plunge into his journey of the grind. Everything from dropping out of college to going on tours but still recording in his basement is touched upon.

I loved his verses. The croaky bounce he sings with is relatable. I hear a 'secure in my weirdness' inflection. And through a dominating Solange reference, encouraging wordplay and pure confidence as a product of his backstory all throughout, Ric Wilson is prepping a seat at the table. He and his people, they're suppose to be here. We're suppose to be here. Ponytail sonically lets your hair down, or better yet keeps it growing till it reaches the sun. Either way, the music bounces black excellence from person to person. It's a theme embedded in music that is never tired.

Listen to Ponytail below.
