Terrace Martin let go of some ear candy he did a few years back, and I think he's down playing his old work.

Here, My Dear is a sonic sugar rush. Let's start at this song's gut, the bass drum. Terrace's rumbling bass drum is a thick bass that's felt. You can mouth "Boom! Boom! and beat your chest in unison. The sound puts you in the thick of the music. That bass resembles the heart. It's sweet. Terrace Martin pattering with his drum's rims mix with an echoing hand drum, creating an almost alternate rim shot. The sound builds a smokey drum pocket. Terrace's shy chord progression underneath it all invests me deeper into the music. The progression starting at low levels brings up this "will they or won't they?" type of feeling. Then hearing the levels climb injects such confidence in the track. I'm smitten musically. There's a release of cool from the music. The groove comes with its own dance and that's a huge testament to Terrace Martin's artistry.

Here, My Dear's vocals set this love gesture in motion. The vocals are auto-tuned in the only way that I love. The auto-tune takes a half page from Roger Troutman's pioneering use of it. Terrace doesn't sing computerized, instead he comes out the gates more like a robot. I believe sounding like a robot makes these emotions impenetrable. They're built to withstand the tests of time. An overall comforting idea.

Here, My Dear is fantastic music. Martin's closing piano tangent is an improvised bow only jazz has the freedoms for. Drops of old Terrace Martin is a consistent smooth. I know y'all will hear that. The production is too bold not to.
