Marko the Mad is an artist who has found a home on this blog. His project GodHatesMarko has been in talks periodically when I've covered a few of his singles like his cannibalistic joint Animal. But as of the first day of August, Marko dropped his lengthy project that works with some very cool sounds and reaches into some dark spaces.

The 17-track tape is a large body of work. Most deluxe albums reach the 16 to 17 song mark but GHM sits at that length in its raw form (counting Miss Grim "Bonus"). Truthfully, that much meat and potatoes in a project can typically feel like it's dragging around the 13th or 14th song in my experience. GodHatesMarko succumbs to that, not to say that the music isn't still cool.

GodHatesMarko's songs are cool. The tape brings in features from Nobodies' JahRahMF for Karma. There's lovely vocals from Heather Chung on Carousels and a druggy $lim $teez verse on Yeah! that sounds like a direct descendant from Juicy J's influence and rap handbook, if you're into that type of sound. Marko the Mad's track White Lighters (my favorite) displays the most versatility in his production. The way the strings travel with a light folk nature is inviting. Played off ear it sounds like finger picking, scaling from low E to high E with open A, D, G and B strings in between. It's a sound that shouldn't mesh with the slither from the 808s but the tempo everything rides at creates its own relaxing motion. Marko the Mad floats in and out of singing and rapping as well. His flow lives in pocket with the drums and it makes his lyrics of sharing a lighter with a woman (metaphorically or not) adopt endearing qualities through an everyday interaction. And other songs live in similar fashion in completely different spaces that I'll let all who listen discover on their own.

If you ask me, Marko the Mad's music is getting better with each drop. I'll revisit GodHatesMarko to write more in depth about it, until then do as I do and stream it in full below.
