Cheney (Parsons') latest song Astronomy is a nice little star gaze space to be in. Astronomy (mainly aimed at girls in relationships fed up with a guy's bullsh*t) does bring a universal solidarity to the thought of being by yourself. At least, that's how I interpreted it.

Astronomy drops in with a pretty tranquilized production from producer Sound Of Fractures that I believe opens the song up a bit. His pastiche drums are working with three separate sounds. One drum brings a flat dead pan sound, another brings a pop, and naturally the kick is stingy. But the overall drums lapping over one another has its own way of hitting within the song; it visualizes like achromatic paint splattering on a surface. Fractures' very ticky 808s also usher in an underbelly of attitude. The true color comes in from Cheney's vocals however. Cheney has been described as a cross between The Weeknd and Lana Del Rey. Nothing against Lana Del Rey, but I'm not one for her music. Cheney I believe I can enjoy a lot better, but I can see where that comparison comes into play. The vocals don't shine with strength here, like much of The Weeknd's earlier work did (which nothing compares to and that I love more than anything) before he started raising his vocal range. There are wispy vocals here. Cheney's vocals have a light windy quality to them, especially when her voice goes through that manipulation -- it gets very Weeknd-esque and feels druggy. I liked it. Because even with those familiar feelings from the music and thinking about that space, Cheney's lyrics are what pulled me away from all the bull and pushed in a feeling of comfort by simply moving on and being okay with your own company.

Astronomy is a cool song. It all has a familiar sound, but it stays in the space of being Cheney's own. I'm intrigued to find out what her forthcoming debut EP The Coming (6/17) will sound like. Hopefully we will find out where she truly stands as an artist.
