I have no clue who leaked Chano's track Grown Ass Kid (ft. Mick Jenkins & Alex Wiley.) All I know is I feel truly blessed to have heard it. I love this spectacular track that didn't make the cut for Chance's Coloring Book. It has damn sure changed my musical life, just as the rest of Coloring Book already has. Grown Ass Kid shares the same scope as Coloring Book. And I've never found a greater youthful joy from a song than I am discovering from each listen.

I couldn't feel these overwhelming feelings of sunny comfort if it wasn't for the safe atmosphere building production. Nascent and Cam O'bi took me to church before a single word was uttered. That heavily faint cymbol mimicked coming down the aisle. Their popper imitating drums made me adopt the pleasure of being a part of something. Nascent and O'bi's preachy pipe organ and wavy guitar/bass guitar that reach near a Seinfeld-esque chord bend bring in an undeniable groove. I thought it all had a unifying sound that solely wants to bring everybody together. That Pipe Organ really had the power of singing in church, ushering in an inviting warmth beyond the music. The magic of Chance was captured, in my opinion. He wants to make music for all; as such, Grown Ass Kid is for all.

Grown Ass Kid puts a loving sunshine in my heart. This song is what emotions of determination are made of. The music personally gave me a massive spiritual presence, while the opening vocals help part my clouds. They sound so playful and like they're calling for attention. Mick Jenkins' verse is the jump off for feeling so amazing after the song. Mick spits in such a stern way, reassuring us that he'll be okay. He's aligned with God and those spirits in his verse are felt. Whether you're a believer or not. Then Cam's gorgeous hook comes flooding in, giving Grown Ass Kid a fun defiance to grow up, a desire to hold onto who you are. At least that how the music hit me. Chance's verse atoned to that, sounding so inspiring. I heard it like he was laying down examples as to why I should let go of those excuses, find my lane in regards to what makes me happy and grow in it. Through his references and always impressive rhyming, I gained more faith in Chance and in myself. It was a great musical moment that Alex Wiley brings home.

Alex Wiley's verse was my favorite. His verse hit my ear like it was born out of pure passion and positivity. I walked away from Alex's verse on the side of optimism. It was lines like "I tell 'em make sure when you dream, that you dream big" and how he drove home that he'll have a good day into existence with his immediately recognizable upbeat way of rapping simply lifted me up. I believe he took everything said before him, honed in on those beautifully powerful horns to deliver the final part of the sermon song to make sure we would walk away with something greater. Grown Ass Kid is powerful music. This is the new greatness of Chicago artists on full display. A display of great artists period. Nothing in Grown Ass Kid goes to waste; each and every instrument, cadence, pitch, word and ad lib does something. And that's special.

Grown Ass Kid is what made the Grinch's heart grow three sizes that day. I love this song. And I know y'all will too. So peep GAS/Stream Coloring Book below (again and again.)
