Nick Leon has taken a small excerpt from MF DOOM's handbook, if you ask me. I believe with his new instrumental, Jaguar Sun, Nick's metaphorically flipped DOOM's line "Sounds to me like that old robbery/extortion" from Strange Ways to fit the way he's busted through to the top spot amid best "new" producers of this year, evidently knocking out a few in the process. And it's been dope to hear what has been produced.

Nick Leon's Jaguar Sun sounds fresh in today's crowded production space, and that's a rarity. Right away this beat goes down a road less traveled. The damp opening strings have a wallowing affect, enhanced with his choice of shaker/percussive musical instrument -- along with the arrangement Nick Leon programmed in -- that holds the rhythm in a way that brings an enthralling naturalist sense of adventure to the song that rushes in a wave of relaxation. Jaguar Sun took on the energy of a jungle and the fun of exploring it. Leon's lively kicks have a knock that's in their own al fresco pocket; I thought it brought a feeling of desire to the track -- a desire to explore it more musically, a desire to traverse this unwieldy jungle created by the music. It was awesome and a wonderful reminder that music is more than something to simply listen to or kill time. As a listener it's also an opportunity to get lost in emotions, imagination and relate to on a personal level while enjoying on multiple levels. Nick Leon's Jaguar Sun sparks my strongest level of imagination and enjoyment, so I thank him for that. And I'm beyond excited for his album PROFECIA to drop through Alpha Pup Records (4/29) -- so stay posted on Back To The Elements for that stream. It will be one you won't want to miss.
