Throwback: Appreciating The Lunch Breaks Show with Crazy Legs From Rock Steady Crew

A webcast goes down in The Bronx in a kitchen/studio that emerged as the place to be to hear good music around lunch time. A place where you could hear a great DJ from back in the day creating a jammin' mix live during a 1-2 hour set, where you could eat your lunch at the same time you watched food being prepared. This was The Lunch Breaks Show with Crazy Legs.

There's nothing in the music world I miss more than these live streams. Crazy Legs (the president of the legendary Rock Steady Crew) embodied everything I've come to know about hip hop through his  Lunch Breaks webcasts. Watching him scratch was about the closest I've ever come to experiencing the roots of DJing in its rawest form. The added plus of seeing food prepared and eaten at the same time I was hearing music made me feel like I was on the streets of New York as the boom of hip hop was beginning to consume the youth as I watched some dude take the power from a lamp post to power all his equipment. That's how authentic The Lunch Breaks Show was. Crazy Legs came from that. He helped build that scene, and as a hip hop head I think it's mad important to experience that. I'm not sure if Crazy Legs still does these live streams (his last stream was four months ago) but I'll always hold onto those feelings and be grateful for the roots he helped connect and make stronger between me and music.

It was something seeing Crazy Legs do this mix live. DJing is an art and it all needs to be appreciated right here. Crazy's breakbeats, his smooth techniques from his scratching, simple transitions, and beatmatching to transitions with EQ's and effects. He does it all with all types of music because there are no musical limits here. He smoothly connects music from track to track that took me to the era they were created in. In his latest mix posted, he was spinning Set It Off by Strafe, then transitioned into Candy by Cameo, then right into Jamaican Funk by Disco Tech. His mix is simply the destination for good music, and is another reason why I know so much music way before my time. I'm not restricted to just enjoying the music of today, I draw back to the music of the 60's 70's, 80's and 90's because of my mom's diverse musical tastes and this Lunch Breaks Show. Both helped build my vast catalog of music that has no limits.

Crazy Legs is one of the greatest Breakers to ever live, and what he does as a DJ cannot be dismissed. His b-boy background made it into the mix. CL has the electric songs you can move to, those songs strictly for the B-boys and those songs 'for the ladies' with my jam I Get So Lonely by Janet Jackson in the latest mix, and that's him representing the culture to the fullest. Hip hop came out of Black, Puerto Rican/Latino neighborhoods in the Bronx and he represents us all with his Lunch Breaks show. It's a funky mix of feel good sh*t that brings us together to dance, to laugh, to create amazing things in the highest forms of art. And that's what's missing from a lot of music today. That togetherness, that indescribable boom you get from music. It exists here in spades at The Lunch Breaks Show with Crazy Legs. Always having me ready to hit Disco Fever or a fly block party when listening. So while y'all get acquainted with Crazy Leg's show below, I'll be blasting off at Disco Fever in my head. And a big thank you to Crazy Legs. You're a pioneer and will always be appreciated as such here at Back To the Elements.
