Man, I'm very excited to included Kanye West's "Guilt Trip" in my playlist. It took me about two and a half years to like and understand "Yeezus", and I'm better now for it.
"Guilt Trip" is a song everyone should be able to appreciate, even if you don't like it. As I listen to this song it puts me into the shoes of 2013 Kanye West once "Yeezus" dropped. And being in those shoes makes me understand what Kanye West means when he says he's a futurist. "Guilt Trip" (just "Yeezus" in its entirety) is the sound hip-hop is in now. The heavy dark synths, how auto-tune is used: that's Travis Scott, that's the production space we're living in, that's the sound that Kanye had before it was 'the sound'. And for that fact alone, I had to pick "Guilt Trip" as one of my songs of the week. I won't get into the entire song too much, but the futuristic sound affects of lazer guns, synths that sound lost in time and keys that take me far away from Earth. Far away from this galaxy. I begin traveling faster than the speed of light through the Earth's future timeline. The beat helps me envision the Earth becoming a Utopia, then I witness that perfect world succumb to destruction due to a futuristic war. It all plays like a movie. "Guilt Trip" is a movie in my head more than it is a song. And that's pretty damn unique to me.
But I've gotta say, the two biggest reasons this song stands in this playlist is because of Kid Cudi and the arrangement of violins. Kid Cudi brings unexpected catchy softness to the song. There's a love element that I never would have completely felt if Cudi's vocals weren't on this song. And those violins. This is why Kanye can be considered a musical genius. I haven't heard such lovely strings since I became addicted to The Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby". Like the violin in "Eleanor Rigby", the strings are lonely and subtly orchestral, where I personally hear a bit of tragedy every time the bow graces a string. If I had to guess, I think those violins are what inspired the one's on "Guilt Trip". But, either way, "Guilt Trip" is just wonderful sounds and music that is beautifully put together in a way that I can't shake. I won't be able to ever fully express how much I love this song. So I'll just let y'all jump right into it and prepare for a journey of your own.
