Supa Bwe Stands Strong with His Solo Project "The Dead Occasion"

First things first - Happy Belated to Supa Bwe! And thank you for giving us "The Dead Occasion" tape on your birthday.

Supa Bwe (one of the three members of Hurt Everybody) dropped his solo project "The Dead Occasion" and gave us who he is. The eleven-track tape is Supa's thoughts and feelings, insight on his surroundings coming up and what it's like being him now. He really paints these scenarios and sets certain moods with his cadences. Going from the most lit and insane flow when he raps, then smoothly transitioning to computer-sounding vocals, which is definitely a sound I haven't heard from anyone out today. That particular style (that changes up throughout the tape) is put at the forefront with the song "Pixar". Supa's vocals which are backed with comforting lounge room-sounding piano and soft bass and claps accurately create an accepting attitude toward this girl who isn't into what he is. It gives "Pixar" this love song feel, but after that short interlude in the middle of the song he flips it and goes wild for a second. It gave me a great understanding of the beauty and insanity in Supa Bwe's life and added great direction for the rest of "TDO".

The direction Supa Bwe goes in is from there is from the perspective of who he currently is. Songs like "Contact" explore how he doesn't know who is genuinely there for him due to his borderline fame. The song "Jon The Crow (Robbs Wedding)" stays in that same realm of him addressing his loneliness. I felt that these two songs in particular brought a nice darker tone to "The Dead Occasion" that balanced out the lighter songs and gave a view of all sides of Supa Bwe. This gave me a better understanding of who he is musically and as a person. He gave us the dark and the light and I think "The Dead Occasion" ends at the dark side of the spectrum. The final track "Supa Buu" (shout out to DBZ) is Supa going completely nuts. He reverts back to his flow most associated with Hurt Everybody and raps about how he'll just finish and kill everything, lyrically or otherwise. It's definitely the hardest song on the tape and exposes the final side of Supa Bwe.

"The Dead Occasion" is a really good solo effort from Supa. He made what it is very clear at the start. And I (along with hopefully most of you) were able to walk away with some dope music, the certainty of knowing what "TDO" is and knowing a little more about one of the dopest artists coming out of Chicago. This is definitely one of my favorite mixtapes of the year. I can't wait to see what else comes from Hurt Everybody and their solo projects.
