Flatbush ZOMBiES Break Mental Chains With Their New Video For "Blacktivist"

If you're like me and follow everyone who's a part of the Beast Coast movement, then you've been dying for some new music from Flatbush ZOMBiES. Well, we finally got a little something yesterday with the release of their new video for "Blacktivist" (and word of an EP dropping this year). Jumping right into the video I didn't entirely know what to expect. I've listened to Flatbush songs before and am extremely versed with their music, but I didn't want to have any preconceived notions so I could completely absorb everything like a blank canvas.

The video appears to be out of the norm for a ZOMBiES video at first. It starts with a montage of caught footage of black men and women being brutally apprehended and killed by police. Right away you can tell they're taking a stronger social standpoint with this video rather than the druggy, muddy-sounding songs and full-fledged trippy videos we all love. As soon as Meechy Darko's verse comes in the visuals change to him being fed propaganda from reality shows, popular brands and every other poison that exists in the world. It's all real powerful imagery that is truly eye-opening as to how destructive the world is and how what you're fed on a daily basis plays a role in that. It makes a topic that isn't regularly thought about an issue that can't escape your mind and that's important today. Our microwave generation never lingers on any pressing societal matters, typically opting to look the other way as we sweep them under the rug. The problems need to be addressed and I love Flatbush for doing so here. Meech's verse really enforces all that in a single thought. His flow (which I've always thought was amazing) has so much distress behind it that it brings a sense of urgency to the song.

When the song moves along into Erik Arc Elliott's verse, the feeling that was present during Meech's verse shifts. I personally felt like it became hopeful. His beyond striking verse offers the idea that we can break out of that mental prison. We don't have to succumb to all the mind-numbing stimulates that exist in our everyday lives. It is spectacular leeway into Zombie Juice's verse. Juice's verse (and moment in the video) plays as the retaliation. The ZOMBiES have taken matters into their own hands and that genuine sense of giving a f**k is there. The sense of caring is shown when the group members channel ISIS as an unfortunate world leader kneels before them ready to surrender to his fate. I'll leave the final sequence as mystery.

It's all great music, powerful imagery and messages that will be forever engraved in my mind. It's the prime example as to why music with a message will always win and be the first love of my life.
